St. Louis Fantastic
We love to travel and go see new and exciting places but
St. Louis is where, as they say, we hang our hat. So St. Louis gets it's
very own page for people and places that you have to check out whether you are a
long time resident or just passing through.
games
FBN - the fantasy shop
The fantasy shop is one those great places you can do go to enjoy all the things
that a fan of pop culture take joy in. They have comics, games large pointy
object hanging from the wall and a large area to stop and take part in
tournaments, the odd pick up game or a regular campaign. They have a large
amount of locations in the St. Louis area and are a great place to meet up with
like minded individuals.
music
vintage vinyl
The place to shop for music in St. Louis. I have been making purchases at
Vintage vinyl for at least ten years and they never fail to have what I am
looking for from regardless of it's old or new, popular or a cult hit and they
span all genres. If they don't have then they can get it for you. .
movies
St Andrews three
In these hard economic time it is nice to know there are business owners looking
out for us. St Andrews theater recently put their price back down to $1 for all
shows which is great news for those of us who love to see movies (once or more
then once). The refreshments are just as nicely priced and the seating
arrangements while not the same as the brand new megaplexes are comfortable. The
perfect place to enjoy that movie for the second time or to catch that flick you
did not think warranted the nine dollar investment.
AMC west Olive
There are some movies though that I like to see in a large theater with seat
that you put the arm rests up and get comfortable and AMC west olive is my
personal choice for that. The theater seats are large and accommodating and the
place has all the latest bells and whistles that make a huge special effects
movie a joy to see on the big screen.
Ronnie's 20
Yes I feel a little bad about putting two locations from chain establishments
onto what is supposed to be a list of local gems but I have a soft place in my
heart for the Ronnie 20 cinema for one thing it was one of the few local
theaters that had a big screen showing of Brotherhood of the wolf and the second
is it is the best place to take your kids to see a show. Besides the large
number of screens they have a game room, bowling alley and a food court area
that is shaped like a drive in movie complete with cars to sit and a projection
of movie trailers to watch while you eat.
The
Tivoli
I liked to call the Tivoli the critics choice because they show lots of foreign
and independent films but they also include epic martial arts movies, animation
and the rocky horror pictures show in their regular selections so every one
really has a reason to check them out. They also have a distinctive take of
refreshments and for a night away from the ordinary a movie fan could make no
better choice.
books
subterranean books
I had started to believe there were no more great little book stores any more. I
had thought that Border and Barnes and Noble had put them out of business. That
is until I discovered subterranean books in the Delmar loop neighborhood. This
is the place where I found on the shelf all the books that I thought about
special ordering from the large chain stores and a whole host of books I did not
know I wanted to read but now I do. The staff is great and the store while not
huge has everything it a book lover could ask for.
comic books
Star clipper
Star clipper is my favorite stop when I need to get my comics fix. They are the
best place for the hard core comic book fan to hit in St. Louis. They carry
almost every new comic and have an impressive display of graphic novels of both
new original material and collected editions of classic stuff combine that with
a knowledgeable staff and you can't go wrong.
Comic Relief
Comic relief is the collectors best friend with a large inventory of new and old
comics and a generous pull and hold discount if you buy your comics in bulk then
this is place to hit.
food
Amighettis:
5141 Wilson Avenue, St. Louis Missouri 63110O
When you are looking for a great sub sandwich made on homemade bread go no
further then Amighettis. Located in the Italian section of St. Louis
known as 'the hill' this could be the home of the greatest sandwich in
all of St. Louis.
Bristol Seafood Grill
- Creve Coeur
11801 Olive Blvd., Creve Coeur, MO 63141
When you are in the mood for top notch food and great service you can
not go wrong with the Bristol. Though the prices are what you would
expect from a first class restaurant they are worth every penny and they
can not be beat for Sunday brunch.
Cicero's
6691 Delmar Blvd St Louis, MO 63130
Another great place for pizza in the loop is Cicero's though they also
have great pasta and a world class beer list. The perfect place to enjoy
dinner and a couple of beers before spending the night out on the town
with your friends.
Fitz’s -
6605 Delmar Blvd. in University City
Truly a St. Louis landmark Fitz's is the home of the Fitz's
bottling company where they make some of the best the root beer in the
world and it also houses a really good restaurant. You can bring the
kids to watch the bottling machine and drink all the grape soda they can
handle while you eat some of the voodoo pizza. This place is a definite good
time for all.
Ryce Oriental Buffet
12710 Dorsett Rd., Maryland Heights, MO 63043
I have always been a lover of Chinese food and liked to frequent many
establishments but when I found Ryce Oriental buffet I knew I was hooked for
life. They have a gorgeous sample of buffet food and a create your own Mongolian
barbeque that is to die for. If you like oriental food this is the place for
you.
Skeeters Frozen Custard
9622 Lackland Rd, Overland, MO 63114
As I was writing my picks I realized there were places to eat but no places for
desert. So I was thinking ‘what is the best way to get through a hot Saint Louis
night’ and my mind instantly came to Skeeters. The best place to get custard in
the St. Louis area. It’s a neighborhood place so you might have to look for it
but once you find it you will not want to go anywhere else for ice cream and
custard.
Vivola express
1911 Schuetz Rd, Saint Louis, MO 63146, USA
Vivola is the place where ordinary sandwiches become extraordinary. You can
almost anyplace to get a soup and sandwich but Vivola is on whole different
level. The service is great and most days you can run into the owner slicing the
meat as your order the food. The portions are generous and nicely priced and
taste delicious. Simply put it’s the perfect place for lunch.
Woofies
1919 Woodson Rd,
Overland,
MO
63114
It seem strange to me that one of my favorite places to eat in St. Louis is a
place that serves Chicago style hot dogs but I have no choice they are the best
hot dogs I have ever tasted ( and yes I have ate them in Chicago). The location
is sparse with just a couple of benches and a small outside eating area but chow
down on a couple of big daddies and some chili fries with some good friends and
you won't need anything else to complete the experience.
attractions
Cahokia Mounds State Historic Site
30 Ramey St.
Collinsville, IL 62234
located just a hop skip and jump across the Mississippi river is the
Cahokia Mounds State Historic Site. This location is where one of the
largest Native American settlements in the whole country was located and
it also tells the story of its mysterious departure from the scene. The
history and art are very interesting and I never go that I don't leave
with ideas for a bevy of new stories.
City Museum
701 N. 15th St.
St. Louis, MO 63103
There are few places that are dedicated to kids where adults can have
just as much fun. The city museum is one of those. The museum is a mix
of creative architecture, crafts and interesting exhibits. Anybody
visiting St. Louis with kids would be doing them a disservice if they
don't stop by.
St. Louis Zoo
I have gone to a many zoos around the country and I think the St. Louis
zoo is the best free zoo there is. There are a variety of exhibits and
they are constantly updating the park with everything from a Cheetah
breeding area to a place when you can watch otters slide and swim. There
is no place better for a family to spend a day out and about.
Verizon Wireless Amphitheater St. Louis
14141 Riverport Dr.
St. Louis, MO 63043
Though most days I still refer to it as Riverport from the days
when It first opened and people were not buying the name rights to event
venues Verizon Wireless Amphitheater is still my favorite place to see a
concert. Though you can never find me in a seat, the thing I like best
is the large expanse of lawn seating available which make every concert
just that much cooler.
