Current project: I have a new contemporary
release out on 18 Nov from Ellora’s Cave. It’s called Soldier of Fortune. Here’s
the blurb:
Joanna “Mac” McGregor loves her father, and she’ll do anything to keep him safe
after Alzheimer’s starts to steal his mind. That takes money, and Mac uses her
only skills—those of soldiering—when she takes up a security contract in Iraq.
She doesn’t have time for men, her last vacation fling in Fiji relegated as one
perfect moment to hold close during the grim reality of war.
Soldier Louie Lithgow is tired of fighting, the constant danger, and has decided
this is his last contract. He wants to retire, sink his savings into a place on
the beach, and find the sexy Joanna, his holiday lover.
Mac’s arrival in Iraq causes consternation. They’ve both been economical with
the truth, but the attraction sizzling between them flares hot and bright. They
embark on a clandestine affair—professional and confident during their
high-danger day, passionate with the release of emotional stress during their
torrid nights. One thing is clear—they have different goals and the future is
both murky and dangerous. If they survive their contracts.

my print books if they don’t have them in stock.
Interview questions
How did you get your start in writing?
I’ve always read a lot and the desire to write followed quite naturally. I
wanted to write romance, inspired by New Zealand writers Robyn Donald, Daphne
Claire and Susan Napier. Although I started writing a couple of times, I never
finished anything. Then I discovered boys and that was it for a while. I found
one I really liked and married him. We decided we’d go to Britain on a year long
working holiday. We enjoyed the travel so much our trip lengthened into six
years. Eventually we returned to New Zealand, and I started thinking about
writing again.
I remember waking up one morning and thinking if I wanted to write a book and
sell it, I should start straightaway or I’d run out of time. I think the stars
were in alignment that week because I came across an advertisement with details
of an Auckland University course on writing romance. I enrolled straight away.
One of our local ladies’ magazines mentioned Romance Writers of New Zealand. I
sent off my check to join the group and started my writing journey.
I chased publication from the moment I started writing. It took me six years to
sell my first book, but I wasn’t about to give up. I’m very stubborn that way!
Who are your biggest influences?
I think Nora Roberts, Linda Howard and Sherrilyn Kenyon are some of my biggest
influences, but I’ve always enjoyed reading Agatha Christie mysteries as well. I
think that’s where I get my love of mystery and suspense from.
What is your biggest inspiration when creating?
I get a lot of my inspiration from our local newspaper. I love the small, quirky
stories and often get plot ideas from within its pages. I also read a lot of
fiction and non-fiction books and watch movies and TV shows. I find inspiration
everywhere.
Could you give us the details of your current project?
I’m currently working on book nine in my Middlemarch Mates series, which is
about a black leopard community who live in a small New Zealand country town.
CatNap (Book eight) introduced a brother and sister to Middlemarch. They’re
tiger shifters. CatNap features the brother’s story and I’m currently working on
the sister’s story.
What is the next goal you would like to achieve with your writing?
I’d like to continue writing my existing series and improving my writing. Trying
different things is a lot of fun. I’m concentrating on paranormal and
contemporary stories these days, and when my current projects are completed, I
want to write a longer novel to pitch to agents.
Final four (questions we ask all interviewees)
When the zombies take over the world where will you be?
I’ll be hiding in my writing cave and probably won’t notice until it’s too late
to escape!
Jedi, Ninja, vampire, were-wolf, pirate, fairy or Spartan?
None of the above. I’d like to be a leopard shifter.
What one piece of art, be it music, book, film or
picture, do you think people must experience before they die?
The statue of David in Florence, Italy. He’s very inspirational, especially for
an author who writes romance.
Give one fact that most people would not believe about
you?
My editor threatened to report me to the fashion police because I inflicted one
of my characters with an uncoordinated outfit!
