Interview questions
How did you get your start in music?
I started playing Classical Guitar in school when I was around 8 years old. I
guess that was the beginning! From then I progressed to Electric guitars, piano,
violin, and so on. From a career point of view, I left school at 16 to pursue
music, and applied my self to any relevant job I could find - anything from
working as a luthier's assistant to working in a warehouse full of sheet music!
Eventually I played in a variety of bands, taught guitar and took on session
work when it came up. All the while I was exploring my own musical ideas, and
slowly reconnecting with the literature and artwork I had enjoyed in my
childhood.
who are your biggest musical influences?
It's a pretty varied selection, in terms of musicians my influences span from
the great composers like Bach, Beethoven, Chopin, Rachmaninov etc, right through
to classic rock and metal acts like UFO, Blue Oyster Cult, Metallica, and
onwards to current genres. I'm also a big fan of ambient electronica, folk/world
music, and anything that features a great guitar performance! Many guitarists
have influenced my playing, or at least how i view the guitar and what its
capable of. Players like Tony McAlpine, George Lynch, Martin Simpson, Eric
Johnson, Jason Becker, Marty Friedman and Yngwie Malmsteen have all left a
lasting impression on my style. These days I'm heavily into soundtracks and less
focused on bands. I don't really listen to much current rock or metal whilst I'm
writing or recording, it's too easy to end up leaning towards other peoples
styles and approach when you're absorbing it on a regular basis.
What is your biggest inspiration when creating music?
For me its very much a story or atmosphere driven thing. What am i trying to
convey with these sounds and melodies - what events are unfolding, where does it
take you when you sit back and listen?
Could you give us the details of your current project.
Right now i'm working on the 2nd full length Eternal Descent record with Eddie
Kramer. I'm writing all the material, but this time I'm very fortunate to have
the incredible Gregg and Matt Bissonette handling the Drum and Bass duties
respectively. It's a pretty huge undertaking, based around a symphonic score,
complimented by a heavy rock band and a grand piano! This time I'm really trying
to carry the story across the album, and there will be voice acting and dialogue
appearing across the recording, ripped straight from the pages of the Eternal
Descent comic books.
What is the next goal you would like to achieve with your
music?
I think this record will actually be achieving one of my biggest goals, which
was to write and record an album for full Orchestra, driven by guitar melodies.
The next challenge is going to be finding a suitable format for live
performances. It's not the easiest thing to take on tour, and beyond that, I'd
like to get the comic book visuals in there and make it a complete multimedia
experience. We'll work it out though, stay tuned!
When the zombies take over the world where will you be?
Hmm, probably mapping out a strategy for the human resistance in a Canadian
bunker somewhere. Canada is where its at when it comes to post apocalyptic
survival !
Jedi, Ninja, vampire, were-wolf, pirate, fairy or Spartan?
You can't go wrong with Jedi.
What one piece of art, be it music, book, film or picture,
do you think people must experience before they die?
Thats a tough question - one of the most moving pieces of music I've continually
enjoyed over the years is 'Miserere mei, Deus' by Georgio Allegri. Its a choral
work, written some time in the 1630's I think. The human voice is a very
powerful thing, beyond language and lyrics, the emotion that can be conveyed by
a group of solo vocalists and the empathy that we share is remarkable.
