How did you get your start in music?
I think I was either 15 or 16 and started playing guitar but then realized that
everyone plays guitar, so I moved on to bass, drums, and then set on keyboards
and vocals. I took piano classes back in high school that really help set the
foundation for what I currently do. We went through constant line up changes
from the band's formation back in 2002, until I decided to do everything myself.
Many of the songs were written from 2003 and on, but none were finalized until
2007.
Who are your biggest musical influences?
Deathstars, Dimmu Borgir, Marilyn Manson, Rammstein, Cradle of Filth, The 69
Eyes, The Kovenant, Type O Negative, (old) Nightwish, etc.
What is your biggest inspiration when creating music?
It depends, sometimes it's a band, a song, a piece of art, a movie, etc.
Sometimes it's myself. I just try to write very epic and catchy music that
(hopefully) fans of all different genres of rock, electronic, and heavy metal
can appreciate, and do it without the use of any guitars. Ironically, I am a big
fan of guitar based music, but with Days Of Our Decay I was inspired by the
darker, epic-ness of symphonic black metal and bands with very prominent
keyboards like: Deathstars, Dimmu Borgir and Nightwish, which all lead me in the
direction to basically create Keyboard-Heavy Metal, dubbed "Synth metal."
Vocally, I prefer the more atonal/baritone vocals present in modern
gothic/industrial rock, mixed with black metal influenced screams, all done in a
more melodic way without sounding too "nice" or "pretty." I like things to sound
dark, metaphoric and very over the top, yet with a sense of truth and honestly.
When people start taking things way too seriously, then it is no longer fun and
you just become a parody of yourself.
Could you give us the details of your current project?
I am currently writing and recording songs for our (currently titled album):
"The Letter And The Ghost." Since we don't get the opportunity to play many
shows, we spend most of our time writing and recording music. We obviously keep
all the songs that we feel are strong enough to be on the album and either
rework, or scrap the weaker ones. I always try to stay ahead of everything so
that when we release an album, I am at least half way through with the next one.
Darkside Paradise has been delayed until we can get label backing, in order to
have a proper release, which is why we are currently so far ahead for recording.
We are currently in the stages of signing with an independent label based in
Germany, which will all be announced soon enough.
What is the next goal you would like to achieve with your
music?
To have our music easily available worldwide and to play in Europe.
When the zombies take over the world where will you be?
Way the fuck up in northern Canada, preferably Baffin Island. I'd like to see
zombies try and cross the ocean to get us.
Jedi, Ninja, vampire, were-wolf, pirate, fairy or Spartan?
C'mon... vampire, of course. Not those "fake" vampires from that Twilight movie
though, preferably the one's from the Anne Rice books. Or I could combine two of
those choices and be a: "Vam-pirate." That would be pretty cool. Like Jack
Sparrow, with fangs.
What one piece of art, be it music, book, film or picture,
do you think people must experience before they die?
Probably anything in Europe. Europeans know what's going on. The best art and
music come out of Europe.
Give one fact that most people would not believe about
you?
That one of my life long goals it to be able to pet one of those little white
harp seals.
Also, I am not as serious as most people take me.
