Interview questions
ALL ANSWERS BY MAX POWER, KEYBOARDS (formerly bass)
How did you get your start in music?
- My first musical memories consist of listening to my parents vinyls without
permission at the age of three or four. I used to dig Elvis and Boney M a lot at
that time, but got into metal at a very early age. By the time I was eight, my
record/cassette collection included albums by Kiss, W.A.S.P., Twisted Sister,
Iron Maiden, Dio, Accept and so on.
- I got my first acoustic guitar on my fifth birthday, but didn't have the
patience to learn playing it until early teens. My mom forced me to take piano
lessons for three years at about the age of ten, and I found it so embarrassing,
that I didn't even tell my closest friends about it. Obviously, I'm very
thankful for her nowadays. As I got older, my musical taste developed wider, but
extreme metal took a lethal chokehold on me.
Who are your biggest musical influences?
- From metal, I'd say the works of Samael, Beherit, The Kovenant, Old Man's
Child, Shade Empire, Dimmu Borgir and Cradle of Filth have made an impact. Our
music is quite megalomanic and grandioso, so we've probably snatched more from
classical music (Sibelius, Orff, Wagner) and movie soundtracks, such as Twin
Peaks, Bram Stoker's Dracula and everything by Danny Elfman, than metal.
- As for musicians, I greatly respect the creativity of Tuomas Holopainen (Nightwish),
Jon Nödtveidt (Dissection), Henri Sorvali (Moonsorrow, Finntroll, The Wicked
etc.), Glenn Danzig, Ville Valo (HIM) and all the dudes from Chaosweaver.
What is your biggest inspiration when creating music?
- It's all about capturing the right atmosphere at the right time: creating
sounds and dark melodies from beyond this world. A lot of our orchestrations are
composed spontaneously in the studio, and – as corny as it might sound – we
usually work at night.
- We never sit down and decide what to do, and then pick up our instruments and
start analyzing everything. Our methods are more spontaneous and “unorthodox”,
and luckily our drummer owns Studio Perkele (Ajattara, Deathchain, Waltari), so
its easy to record all the ideas right away. King Alcohol is also a big catalyst
for us from time to time, hahah...
Could you give us the details of your current project.
- We are working on our second album at the moment. Were planning to record it
later on this year and have it in stores on the first half of 2010.
- It will be a concept album, and the story continues from where the last track
on Puppetmaster of Pandemonium, Son of the Moon, left off. I believe it will
surprise a lot of people, because it's quite different from our debut, but even
more “out there”, and as dark and massive. We've stretched the opposites even
further apart, and introduced helluva lot of new elements to our musical
expression.
- Our musicianship has evolved a lot during the last two years, and creativity
blasts in the overdrive. We've got nearly 70 tracks to choose from for the
album!
What is the next goal you would like to achieve with your music?
- The biggest goal is to nail the monster of an album on tape! We're going to
use a few very interesting guest stars on the record, which will be both a
personal highlight for us and an huge energy boost for the album. Musically,
we're very proud of the new tunes, as well as every single track on Puppetmaster
of Pandemonium. So, our goal is to keep on improving!
final four
When the zombies take over the world where will you be?
- Feasting on the flesh of the undead, unharmed myself, of course.
Jedi, Ninja, vampire, were-wolf, pirate, fairy or Spartan?
- Jedi's are the ultimate master race. Full support for the “musketeers” of the
Force.
What one piece of art, be it music, book, film or picture, do you think people
must experience before they die?
- I'd wanna say our forthcoming album, but that would be sucking my own dick, so
I'll recommend the highly underrated masterpiece Reinkaos by Dissection. Check
out the whole Twin Peaks saga too while you're at it.
Give one fact that most people would not believe about you?
- I arranged that Paul Allender of Cradle of Filth – who is a great guy and a
big fan of ours by the way – got his very first tattoo for free, when they were
playing in Finland last year!
