How did you get your start in music?
- There is actually a picture of me in Tweety Bird Onesie, pacifier in mouth,
playing on a drum set from Sears. For some reason I have had this natural draw
to the instrument but I started playing drums "seriously" when I was in sixth
grade. I took drum lessons for a year from a Jazz player named Jim Grambling who
I owe greatly for starting me on my musical journey. Then it was jazz band in
school, a couple rock bands in high school, and the music capital of the world
(Austin, TX) for college. And that's where I met Avi Ghosh.
Who are my biggest influences?
-My influences are absolutely embarrassing. I can't even lie. When i was growing
up my dad introduced me to acts like Boston, David Bowie, and he loved Kiss. So
i definitely got a taste for the theatrics. However, everyone quotes The Beatles
or some uber significant band as musical influences and I unfortunately can't
say the same thing. I don't know if the timing was just right, or it was me
being young and naive but it was actually Thursday's Full Collapse Album that
made me want to pack everything into a van and tour the world.
What is my biggest inspiration when creating music?
-This one is difficult because I assume the question is aimed towards Avi who is
the songwriter of the band but I definitely try to channel my favorite drummers
when writing drum parts. Drummers like Dave Grohl, Josh Freese, Tucker Rule, and
Aaron Gillespie.
Details on the current project:
-Art Versus Industry is a band that was formed in March of 09' when Avi Ghosh
decided to enlist the help of myself and guitarist/keyboardist Matt Gruber in
order to bring to life the musical project that had once been just Avi Ghosh
writing, and recording all the instruments for the past releases. The band is
new to Austin so we are working on a musical take over of the city, as well as
releasing a remix album in November, and a new full length come March of 2010.
What is the next goal we hope to achieve with our music?
-First and foremost, become a hot ticket in our hometown. Then we hope to tour
the U.S. without the help of a label or management. The ultimate goal being that
we can quit our horrible day jobs, tour nine months out of the year, and not get
ourselves in financial debt. We also would like to change people's perspectives
on current music. It all seems so vacuous and heartless and we really want to
bring back a feeling that what we do really is an art form. Oh yeah, and we want
to melt faces with our keyboards.
When the zombies take over the world where will you be?
- Hiding in a remote cabin in Arkansas (zombies would hate Arkansas) with the
Hawaiian bikini team. Of course i would probably have to teach them how to
behead a zombie but I wouldn't mind.
Jedi, Ninja, vampire, were-wolf, pirate, fairy or Spartan?
- Jedi for sure. They are like futuristic ninjas who get to fly around the
universe. Can't beat that.
What one piece of art, be it music, book, film or picture, do you think people
must experience before they die?
-If you are from the south you gotta read Faulkner. My favorite is As I Lay
Dying and The Sound and the Fury. Talk about absolute bleakness that will change
your life.
Give one fact that most people would not believe about
you?
- When i was in seventh grade I was bit by a squirrel.
